Learn About the World’s Largest Digital Camera

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park took the first 3200-megapixel digital photos using an image sensory array. These are the largest photos ever taken in a single shot. Like the image sensor inside the DSLR, the focal plane captures light from or reflected by an object and converts it into electrical signals to produce a digital image. These high-resolution sensors are expected to play a vital role in the observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), answering the questions about the structure, evolution of the universe and the objects in it.
