What makes a great leader? Well, every leader is unique, and their approach to leading a team is also distinctive. Similarly, different working environments demand different styles of leadership. Leadership Styles that You Must Know

Autocratic Leadership

Often known as authoritarian leadership, the leaders generally have all the power, responsibility, and authority in an organization. This type of leadership is quite rigid. However, in organizations that demand structure, quick decision-making, and close supervision, it can prove beneficial. Autocratic leadership’s drawbacks are that communication may be flawed; workers may feel demoralized; organizations may fail to function without the leader.

Democratic Leadership

Democratic leadership is characterized by the leader’s choice to involve team members in the decision-making process. A democratic leadership style can be an excellent choice for a smaller team or a team composed of similarly skilled members. Under this leadership style, employees feel motivated to participate in decision-making, employees feel like their input is valued, and leaders have a diverse set of perspectives to consider.

Laissez-Faire

“Here, your boss is neither interested in you nor your work. All he cares about is to finish his formality of doing his work by supervising you,” explains the author. This leadership style is an effective way to lead a team composed of highly-skilled individuals.

Transactional Leadership

Here, the leaders’ primary goals are order and structure in the workplace. Self-motivated employees tend to be the most successful ones because the structure and rigid environment already exist. Transactional leadership is prone to micromanagement.

Supportive Leadership

Supportive leaders delegate and assign tasks to employees and provide employees with the skills needed to complete the assigned task. The employees maintain autonomy. However, a supportive leader steps in and works through problems and issues, as they arise.
