How Do You Migrate to ITIL v4 from ITIL v3?

AXELOS is discontinuing ITIL v3 Foundation from 1st July 2021 and ITIL v3 Intermediate from 1st January 2022. Even the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition examination will be stopped by 1st July 2022. Meanwhile, most professionals across the globe have ITIL Foundation, according to the 2020 IT Skills and Salary Report. How do you help them transition? In this article at IT Brief, Rose Dyson shares tips to help you migrate to ITIL v4 from ITIL v3.

How to Migrate to ITIL v4

AXELOS not only updated the ITIL framework’s version but has also changed the levels’ name. ITIL v3 had four levels—Foundation, Intermediate, Expert, and Master. In contrast, ITIL v4 has Foundation, Managing Professional, Strategic Leader, and Master. The makers have made quite a bit of change in the framework, so just choosing the ‘upgrade option’ will not suffice this time. You might be having a lot of questions in your mind at this point. For instance, if your existing certification would be valid anymore or if you must retake all the level tests.

Here’s how you could seamlessly migrate to ITIL v4:

You Have ITIL v3 Foundation Certification.

Fear not! You do not have to retake the entire course even though the v4 version has been substantially modified. The shortcut course—‘Upgrade to ITIL Foundation’ is available till June 2022. If you have not taken the course so far, attend the entire Foundation course for ITIL v4.

You Have ITIL v3 Intermediate Certification.

If you have 17 credits, you can migrate to ITIL v4 by taking a short course of the ITIL 4 ‘Managing Professional’ level. The 5-day long course is available only till June 2022. If you do not have 17 credits in your ITIL kit, you must take a combination of ITIL v3 Intermediate Lifecycle Modules. Do not fail to attempt the exam by June 2022, whether you have 17 credits or not. Otherwise, you will lose the existing credits and go through the new 14-day ITIL v4 equivalent course instead.

You Have ITIL v3 Expert Certification.

If you are a certified professional, you just need to undergo a 5-day transitional ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition course. If you fail to take the course by July 2022, you should take the new 14-day ITIL 4 Managing Professional course.
