What is PDCA Cycle?

PDCA is a methodology for achieving continuous process improvement. It involves systematic testing of possible solutions and assessment of results. PDCA is based on the scientific method of problem-solving popularized by Dr. W. Edwards Deming, who is considered the father of modern quality control. The cycle provides a simple and effective approach for solving problems and managing change. Additionally, PDCA enables organizations to develop hypotheses about the changes needed. It allows businesses to test these hypotheses in a continuous feedback loop to gain valuable learning.  

When Should You Use PDCA Cycle?

You must use the PDCA cycle when:

Initiating a new improvement projectDeveloping a new or improved design of product, service, or processDefining a repetitive work processWorking towards continuous improvementPlanning data collection and analysis to verify problems or root causes

The PDCA Procedures


Identify and understand the problem or opportunity. Then, explore the available information in depth. Generate and screen ideas, and develop a robust implementation plan.


“This involves developing and implementing a solution, deciding on how the effectiveness will be measured, how testing will be conducted, and how results will be measured,” explains Mangezi.


Analyze your pilot project’s results against the expectations you defined in step 1. Then, assess whether your idea was a success. If your original plan fails to work, you will need to return to step 1.


Implement your solution. Remember, PDCA is not a process with a beginning and an end. Your improved process is a new baseline where you must continue to look for ways to make it better.
