Governments worldwide are exploring the potential use of ‘vaccine passports’ as a way of re-opening the economy by identifying those protected against the coronavirus. Many startups, non-profit organizations, and governments have rolled digital health passports. However, there is no single health passport that is used across the globe. Julie Wernau explains, “The goal of this system is to make people feel safe enough to resume everyday activities—eating inside a restaurant, going to a concert venue, or traveling.” Experts believe the health passports must include interoperability (ability to work across different institutions and borders) and verifiable health records (vaccine health certificates and case history).
