Do You Have These Skills to Handle IoT Projects?

Studies indicate that the number of businesses that use the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has increased from 13% in 2014 to 25% today. The number is expected to grow almost threefold by 2023. However, project managers in many companies lack enough skills to manage and execute IoT projects. According to Gartner Research, insufficient staffing and lack of expertise are barriers for organizations currently looking to implement and benefit from IoT. In this article at TechRepublic, Mary Shacklett explains that IoT projects demand new skills from IT project managers. So, what new skills should IT project managers possess?

Practices to Consider

Security Focus

Security is significantly more complex in IoT projects. “This is due to the diversity of IoT solutions in the marketplace,” says Shacklett. With an increase in the number of connected devices and data collection, project managers must implement built-in security. Furthermore, they must track their open-source software. With security playing a crucial role, IoT project managers must possess in-depth knowledge of IoT security.

Vendor Management

Often, IT project managers work with vendors during the risk management process. However, in IoT projects, IoT vendor support may be inadequate or even non-existent. Therefore, managers must have the skills to come up with solutions.  This makes vendor relationship management a mandatory skill for IoT project managers.

Effective Training

There are significant changes in operational processes, especially in IoT projects. Employees must adjust and feel comfortable with these work process changes. To achieve IoT project success, project managers must conduct training. Any attempt to discard or understate training sessions in IoT projects will undoubtedly lead to project risk or failure.

Project Teams

With all the technologies required in IoT, project managers must diligently choose their teams. The project team must contain hardware and software engineers, embedded device experts, storage and integration professionals, and server clustering specialists.

IoT project managers must understand the needs of IT and operations. This will help them bring both sides of project teams together to achieve project success. To read the original article, click on https://www.techrepublic.com/article/iot-projects-demand-new-skills-from-it-project-managers/.
