Remote Work Monitoring: Your Boss is Watching You

The pandemic has led to unprecedented levels of remote working. Digital tools are gaining popularity among employers that are looking for new ways to track employee productivity. At the same time, this trend has raised concerns about how far companies must be allowed to keep tabs on their workers. In this article at InformationWeek, Jessica Davis explains how remote work leads to more employee surveillance.

AI-Powered Employee Monitoring

According to a study conducted by Gartner, many organizations are using AI-enabled systems to analyze employee behavior. “These tools can provide basic activity logging with alerts or attempt to detect positive actions or misbehavior through multivariable analysis,” says Davis. Gartner’s study reveals that 10% of workers will try to trick AI-driven tracking systems by 2023.

Many professionals have also raised concerns about informal staff monitoring. For example, employees would often log into meetings by turning on their videos. However, one day they might be in a car or new location. This can lead to employers thinking that professionals are not focused enough. All these factors raise questions about how much surveillance impacts people’s work practices, general well-being, and privacy.

How to Ethically Monitor

Studies reveal that employers promote these surveillance and monitoring technologies to employees by labeling them as employee wellness initiatives. However, here are some ways for business leaders to ethically monitor their employees.

Clear Reason

If surveillance must be ethical, managers or business leaders must communicate the reasons for monitoring individuals. Furthermore, as a manager, focus your supervision on enhancing customer experience rather than scrutinizing internal operations.

Mindful Surveillance

All teams must receive fair and consistent levels of monitoring. For example, junior-level employees must not be monitored to a greater extent than their managers.
