Psychological Safety: How to Create a Safe Environment

What does a highly successful team look like? Do you imagine professionals with exceptional resumes? Contrary to your assumption, the highest-performing teams work in an environment where they feel heard and valued. Studies indicate that psychological safety is the critical factor that distinguishes high-performing teams from others. So what is psychological safety? And, how do you achieve it? In this article at Project Bliss, Leigh Espy explains a leader’s role in creating psychological safety.

What Is Psychological Safety?

To innovate together, team members must feel they can candidly talk to each other without fear of judgment. Such a work environment is often described as a ‘psychologically safe’ workplace. Additionally, psychological safety is a shared belief that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking. “It also includes having access to information about others’ actions and decisions. Team members also have opportunities to learn from mistakes made by other employees,” says Espy. When employees feel accepted and respected, they bring their best selves to work.

How to Encourage Psychological Safety

Facilitate Participation

Design meetings to increase participation and openness. Provide each team member a turn to speak up. As a leader, you must ensure that managers or loud people always go last. You do not want them to influence or intimidate the rest.

Maintain Transparency

Transparency builds trust. Be open about the goals to build trust and respect with your team. Demonstrate that you are willing to learn and improve by asking for feedback from your team. Feedback will undoubtedly help you improve your leadership skills.

Demonstrate Curiosity

Lead your team by example and ask a lot of questions. This will demonstrate that your workplace is a safe environment to be vulnerable. Remember, as a leader, even you have plenty to learn. Allow your team members to see that.
