How to Lead Your Team Under Pressure

Working under pressure and generating results is usually at the top of every professional’s wish list. High-pressure situations can take a toll on your mental health and reflect badly on your work efficiency. A pressing situation can come in any form. It could be the urgency to make a new platform, meet deadlines, achieve a strategic goal, or deliver a performance target. In his article for Strategy+Business, Theodore Kinni talks about ways to lead your team under pressure.

Is Pressure Helpful?

Pressure can be taken as an opportunity that will challenge you and might yield unprecedented results. However, there is an equal possibility of adversely affecting your work performance. When you work in a team and cannot control the bigger picture or how effectively other team members are contributing, the pressure often increases.

Combating the Anxiety Spiral

There are situations when leaders exaggerate the circumstances and things that are considered at stake. Many leaders want to succeed in a pressurized situation just to prove themselves in front of the stakeholders and the business owners. They believe if they do not succeed, they will be considered incompetent and might be asked to leave the organization. To resolve this tendency, it is essential to have an objective evaluation of things that are actually at stake in such a situation. You should ask yourself how you would deal with a person that is in a similar situation and fails to succeed.

Besides, it is always essential to count what is not at stake. Even if you do not succeed after putting your best foot forward, your family and friends will not judge you on your failure. Do not fall under the misconception of closely associating yourself with the success or failure of a single project. You are more than your job description, and there is a lot more waiting for you to discover about yourself.
