Facing Project Conflicts? Mitigate Them Early

Did you know that 14 percent of project conflicts happen because of a lack of strategic leadership? When numerous people work on the same project, project conflicts are bound to happen. As a project manager, you must be upfront about the risks that can derail your project and try to mitigate them early. But what if you fall prey to project conflicts with your stakeholders instead? You must avoid this risk in the conceptual, definition, development, handover, and closing project phases. How do you reduce project conflicts? In her blog article at the Girl’s Guide to Project Management, Elizabeth Harrin shares strategies you should use to mitigate these issues early.

Why Do Project Conflicts Happen?

Twelve percent of the respondents believe miscommunication, and nine percent think changes create project conflicts. The Professional Development Group’s Shawn Kent Hayashi remarks, “Many people do not allow themselves to see or recognize conflicts in their conversations because they do not know how to resolve conflicts.”

How to Mitigate

Project conflicts occur when interests or choices differ. When this occurs, talk to your stakeholders and prioritize the team’s benefit over anything else.  When Harrin did a survey, she found out that a whopping 28 percent of conflicts happen due to internal team issues. Since you must have team members working together, here are some methods you should apply to arrive at a peaceful truce:

Thomas-Kilmann Conflict mode instrument (TKI) – This is an organic method that helps you resolve conflicts based on your natural responses.The Avoiding Conflict Mode – Believe it or not, the approach works in some situations. For instance, the argument intensity reduces by postponing comments or relocating the arguing members.The Accommodating Conflict Mode – Performing according to the other person’s wants can help reduce project conflicts instead of putting your point forward.The Competing Conflict Mode – Is the other party not being reasonable? Then state your reason, go ahead with your plan, and show that you were right in the first place.The Collaborating Conflict Mode – This approach looks after the interests of all the conflicting stakeholders. Since both want the best for the project, you come to an agreement moving aside the differences.The Compromising Conflict Mode – This approach does not allow any party to win. But the project gets the nod that it needed.
